Gasthof Spielweg
A Taste of the Black Forest
Some places impress you the first time. Others quietly give you a reason to return. For me, Spielweg has become one of those places.
Two Visits, Two Seasons
I first came to the Romantik Hotel & Restaurant Spielweg — known simply as Spielweg — in August 2023. I returned in February 2026: summer and winter, two very different moments in the Black Forest, yet with much the same feeling when arriving.
Set in the Münstertal in the southern Black Forest, Spielweg is one of those places that seems naturally connected to its surroundings. There is a particular sense of calm here. The house feels warm without trying to be grand, romantic without being staged, and deeply rooted in the landscape around it.
Perhaps that is part of the charm of a family-run house: Spielweg does not feel anonymous. It has character, history and that increasingly rare feeling that a place has grown naturally over time.
Where the Black Forest Slows Down
Spielweg lies in the Münstertal, surrounded by the landscape of the southern Black Forest. Forests, hills, fresh air and the changing seasons are not simply a backdrop here — they are part of the experience.
It is the kind of setting that naturally changes your rhythm. Mornings feel quieter. Walks become part of the day. And returning to the warmth of the house after being outside feels exactly as it should.
A House with a Soul
The history of Spielweg reaches back centuries, and since 1861 the house has been closely connected with the Fuchs family. Today, that family tradition continues into its sixth generation.
Yet what I like about Spielweg is that its history never feels like something displayed behind glass. You experience it in the rooms, in the wood, in the details and in the atmosphere of the different Stuben.
It feels lived in — in the best possible sense.
“There is a warmth and quietness here that makes you want to stay a little longer.”
And Then There Is the Food
Food is an essential part of the Spielweg experience. The kitchen is led by Viki Fuchs, whose cooking has become known for bringing together the produce and traditions of the region with her own creative perspective and influences that reach far beyond the Black Forest.
What appears on these photographs is the more relaxed side of lunch at Spielweg — familiar regional flavours, served without unnecessary ceremony and perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the house.
Dinner, however, reveals another side of the kitchen. In the evening, the experience becomes noticeably more refined and ambitious. The cooking is elevated, creative and sophisticated — a different expression of the same philosophy.
That contrast is part of what makes staying here so enjoyable: Spielweg can feel wonderfully uncomplicated during the day and become an altogether more refined culinary experience in the evening.
Why I Would Return
For me, the appeal of Spielweg is not one single thing. It is the combination: the landscape, the family atmosphere, the rooms and Stuben, the food, and the sense of peace that seems to surround the house.
I have experienced it in summer and in winter, and both visits left me with the same thought: this is a place worth returning to.
A Place to Share
There are places you leave with the feeling that you would like to share them with others. For me, Spielweg is one of them.
Its combination of nature, hospitality, food and quiet moments makes it a place I could imagine becoming part of a future Sensory Resonance experience — one of those journeys created not simply around where we go, but around what we remember.
