Alter Torkel Jenins · Wine, Views & a Simple Lunch
Sometimes the best stops are the ones that were never really planned.
On 27 September 2026, driving home from a wonderful weekend in Munich, we spontaneously decided to stop in Jenins, in the heart of the Bündner Herrschaft. Our destination was the Alter Torkel — a place I already knew from previous visits and was very happy to return to.
Surrounded by vineyards and looking out across the valley towards the mountains, the setting is difficult to beat. On this beautiful, sunny early-autumn day, there was really no reason to hurry home.
Wine is naturally part of the story here. We chose a Ciprian Chardonnay — enjoyed outside with the vineyards almost within reach. A glass of local wine, sunshine and that view made a rather lovely welcome back to Jenins.
Lunch itself was deliberately uncomplicated: a simple and delicious currywurst with fries and salad. Sometimes that is exactly what you want — especially after a weekend away and with a good glass of wine beside you.
And afterwards, we stayed.
We moved into the vines, found a comfortable place beneath a sunshade and simply enjoyed the afternoon — the warmth of the sun, the surrounding vineyards and the mountains beyond.
It was a wonderfully unhurried way to bring our Munich weekend to a close: no programme, no rush, just a little more time before heading home.
The historic interior is just as distinctive. Old timber, the monumental wooden wine press and contemporary details preserve the character of the Torkel while giving the restaurant its own relaxed identity.
I have been here several times, and perhaps that is part of its charm for me. The Alter Torkel is not simply somewhere to stop for lunch. It is one of those places where the landscape, the wine and the moment seem naturally to belong together.
And on this particular Sunday, it was exactly the right place to end a beautiful weekend.
